Teacher Training to teach yoga to children with Autism

Where is the best place to learn to be a confident and successful teacher for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD)?

Teaching yoga to children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is difficult and challenging.

Training any potential teacher to teach any subject to children with ASD is challenging. This is because the complexities of ASD are difficult to demonstrate or explain.

I have given countless training workshops to adult audiences on how to teach yoga to children with ASD. Whilst they have been effective, they have been effective up to a point.

This is because they cannot replicate successfully what goes on in the classroom, and cannot adequately prepare you for the work.

The best training can only take place in a school – a school that specialises for children with ASD. Only in this environment can you really see and begin to comprehend the complex needs of the children and learn how to engage them in order teach them yoga effectively.

I believe this is the best and most practical way to enhance your confidence, to improve your class management skills and to enrich the content, structure and delivery of your lessons.

Length of course
The course consists of three distinct and separate days which can be spread over time to suit your needs. It is pretty intensive so we need to start early at 8.00am and work through to 3.00pm.

Taster Days
If you would like to train to teach yoga to children with autism, but are not quite sure if you have what it takes, then a taster day could be the answer for you.

Simply, you can spend a day with me in school, observing, co-teaching and asking questions. At the end of the day you will receive honest and constructive feedback. This route is proving to be a wise approach saving students time, money and heartache.

Also you can try a taster day before committing to two more days of teacher training.

Where does the course take place?
The course takes place in one of East London’s leading specialist schools for children with autistic spectrum disorders. The school is easily accessible on public transport.

Why is this the best course for you?
There are three outstanding reasons why this course enables you to become a more confident teacher:

Firstly, you get to see at first hand what it looks like to teach yoga to ASD children.

You will learn:
  1. How to structure the lessons
  2. How to engage the children
  3. The importance of sensory integration in teaching children’s yoga
  4. Which postures to teach
  5. The most effective approaches to use
  6. How to manage and deal with challenging behaviours
  7. Why the support from Class Teachers and Teaching Assistants is so important and how best to manage it.

Secondly, you will learn how to teach yoga to children at Foundation and Key Stages 1 & 2. In my experience this is the most challenging of all the key stages and the range that I am most requested for help with training.

Thirdly, you will be one of two learners on the day and will, therefore, receive the benefit of One to Two training, which means that:

•You will have an immense amount of attention. This means that you will have more opportunities to engage in honest and constructive feedback and be able to discuss areas of your practice that you would like to improve.

•In addition you will have opportunities to use me as a resource – to ask questions, to observe models of classroom management, behaviour control, how postures are introduced, how games are organised, how to teach relaxation and calming activities, how to teach sequences and much more.

When is the next course?
Courses run throughout the academic year in term time. Training takes place on a Tuesday

Overview of Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course you will be able to:
  • Simplify your planning with clear-cut, highly effective structures and strategies
  • Deliver a progressive course over the term
  • Engage the children so as to help them develop their sensory, motor, language and social skills through the yoga
  • Select postures to match the pupil’s ability
  • Improve your class and behavioural management skills
  • Manage the support from Class Teachers and Teaching Assistants

Assessment and achievement
Of course you need to demonstrate your competence and ability to teach yoga to children. That is why you will take a Qualifying Teaching Practice and hopefully pass. That said, depending upon your confidence and ability, you would have had plenty of teaching practice by the third day.
